Default Ad banner obnoxious

Guys, can we have just 5 freakin minutes to get used to this new forum? This ad thing on the right hand side is too damn wide and VERY VERY annoying. I understand the need for ads, but that needs to go. I especially detest the fact that it's IN the posts and not just on the main forum screens.

Thanks.

What I find absolutely obnoxious is the fact that all the forum links changed, I can put up with the ads, they were here (left side) with the old forum. I just wish we had known that the links were going to change again. Now I have to change all my shortcuts to the new links. He!! I thought the forum was down, if I hadn't of stumbled into the new links I'd still be setting here twiddling my thumbs.

Shall I refund your membership dues? ;)

Seriously, we need to pay for this place somehow. I put the ad on the right-hand side so that it wouldn't cause any scrolling for those with 800x600 monitors when reading threads.

Have you seen the amount of ads on places like Yahoo these days? :D At least we refuse to do things like pop-ups.

It's better on the right side, stops all the scrolling to read messages.

What really irks me is the little cute faces that make my cursor "flash" - what a waste of bandwidth.

Any way you can adjust the width so that it's not so wide? Does it really need to be in the posts themselves? Glad you got to use your new icon, sorry to bother you.

No prob. The sidebar shouldn't affect scrolling to read threads at all. It would affect it if it were on the left hand side of the screen though.

There are many things that cause scrolling. The most common is posting of pictures that are too wide. Also, when replying to a post you have the choice to scroll to the right to see more smilies. You don't need to if you don't want the new smilies.

It's not a perfect design, but I think it avoids unnecessary scrolling while allowing us to pay for the site.

And yes, I'm glad that I got to try out my new icon also. :D

I like the idea of the of the ads on the right, IF it will stop me from having to scroll L to R to read messages.

Yesterday, when I read a message or thread and the hit my back button, I would end up in the topic list near where I left off. Today that feature is gone again. It used to work that way in prior years. What happened?

Ok, I have to make a clarification here. I use the Opera browser. For some reason that ad banner is like 3 inches wide in Opera. I just opened it in IE so it looks fine.

Sorry for the confusion. I have written Troy, maybe he'll fix it.

who knows.

My $0.02

A. I pay for cable, I get commercials (some of them an hour long :U ).

B. I pay to see a movie, I get previews (AKA commercials).

C. I pay taxes to take pleasant drives down the roadways, I get billboards (AKA ccommercials).

D. I pay NOTHING to connect to https://www.corvetteforum.com, I get ad banners (AKA commercials).

No matter how I look at it, "D" is still my best deal

Let me clarify, I wasn't opposing the fact that we have ads. We've gotten ads for a while and I understand this place needs a way to pay for itself.

In the web browser I was using, the bar on the right side of the screen was taking up almost half of the screen. It doesn't do that on IE (which is what I assume this sight was designed to run on).

The sidebar is mysteriously gone now.

If there was a way to pay a subscription to the forum and not get ads I would gladly pay. I can't think of a better way to get more bang for my buck, this forum is an EXTREMELY valuable resourse and I get to communicate with some really great people.

Seriously, that would be way cool, two registration options, and pages are rendered either with or without ads depending on how you registered. This way we still have a snot-load of users and less bickering about ads. I wonder if 25 dollars a year per user would be the right price?

See, I don't just bitch, I offer solutions too

I've taken the sidebar down for now because I need to figure out a way to code it that doesn't have problems with Netscape (and hopefully Opera).

I'll be messing around with that this week to see what I can do.

The idea has been kicked around before of having a version without ads for premium members. I'd want to include a lot more in it though. Maybe things like extra space in the home pages and a custom url for web based email.

Troy

Thanks

I like the idea of paying for premium viewing. the ads have not bothered my IE in viewing.

Seems like you are on top of our needs.

Keep up the good work.

I have no problem with the ads being there. WHAT PIECES ME OFF is I click on the ads (to see what the deal is with this 45% off VETTE mag subscription) and it wont do squat. :mad :U :bs

Troy,

Thank you very much. I was beginning to think everything centered around Windows and IE users. I am a unix and mac user and use opera. Up until the sidebar thing this new forum has worked out much better.

I hope you get everything worked out, if you need a beta tester let me know

The ads on the side of the screen cause me no pain. Don't do pop up, or pop unders, that is a great way to lose users (including me! :mad ). The premium idea might be a good way to go, but since the ads didn't bother me I would probably deal with them and save the money for the vette, and also I still am having trouble getting used to paying to get information on the net that used to be free, but I'm a bit of a tightwad :yesnod:

71,454,4spd, I can save you 100% on your vette mags...Just pass...I get more info on the forum and can look at cars in more detail (owners web pages). I hate it...I wait every month...peek at the cover...drool till I get in the house...get all comfy..then see a couple articles(a C1 or C2, the C3, maybe a C4 and a C5 for sure) Each story/article shows a car shot, engine shot, interior shot and thats it...I'm feed up...BTW whens the next one gonna be here

Here is a bit of sacrilege. The Forum has saved me many hours of labour at a local dealer or repair shop since 1999. The rate varies but let us say $40-60US per hour. There is so much professional advice here. Be it do-it-yourself or negotiate with the shop in a position of knowledge: do not let them :bs you. I would consider a user fee of $25.00US per year entirely reasonable.
