The knurled handle is glued onto the lever. Its a tapered fit so it might take some persuasion to get it off. I wicked Bestine into mine for a day and it released easily but I don't know if it had been off before.
I can't remember how I got the release button off. I think I had to disconnect the rod from the latch pawl and remove the whole thing.
Also, I don't know if I told you but I received your headlight assemblies in good condition. If you rebuilt these yourself, you do excellent work! They are beautiful.
