Default Source for Touch-up Paint/Chip Repair

How does everyone repair thier paint chips?
Where do you get the touch-up paint/whatever?

Some how I ended up with a big chip missing from the passenger side door on the forward door edge (between the door and the fender) on my '77 coupe.

I have the stereo-typical vette red, so I think that is the 72 Medium Red, right? It's a recent paint job and not faded, so I think that I should be able to use touch-up paint. The only issue is that it went down through the primer to the door itself (with an area about the size of 1/2 of a dime exposed).

Anyone have any ideas on how and where I can find the stuff to use to repair the chip?

i bring my 73 into the body shop and he repaires the chips, lot of prep work and he has been pretty fair, silver is hard to match, cuz of the metal flake,, lot of time masking ,,sanding blending,,a chip may require blending a entire panel,,so i leave it to someone who does this every day,,he does a great job and when i need to i just bring it in,,mater of fact im due to get it back in there, i chiped the bumper installing the center grill,,he stoped by and told me 200 bucks,he is also painting the rail under the hood,,,which means the hood has to come off,,like i said lot of prep work,,your best to get in good with a body shop

I took my car to a store that supplied the paint & body shops with product. The owner has a device that looks like a polaroid that he placed close the the body without touching it. From the readings of that device, he was able to mix the paint to match my car.

I started experimenting with how to repair the paint chips myself and have written step by step procedures. The scariest part is sanding once the chip is filled & fully dried. I have been doing this myself for several years and shown many people how to do it for themselves. It is easier if you have a solid color car. The metalics are difficult at best.

Give me your email address and I will send the instructions to you. I could post the procedures to the Tech page too if that helps.

vetteman - That's exactly what I've been doing. I found several websites online and went to a "dentless" repair place in Virginia. They often do use paint and the guy showed me how they do it. Takes practice but I can even paint a portion of a panel that few could find where it's been painted after the block sanding, polish and buffing.

There's another system that I've heard but haven't used call Langka, suppose to work well but I can't speak from experience.

When I first got my 76, I was scared to drive it 'cause the paint was sooooo nice. Figured why have it if you're not gonna drive it so deal with the chips & learn to fix 'em. It's a ton better than watching grass grow!
