The other day I went to tighten up my belts because they were squeaking real bad. Well, I got to tightening them and no matter how tight they are, they squeak. I noticed that my power steering pump pulley isn't lined up properly with my other pulleys. It's at an angle facing inboard and back. So, the belt comes off the power steer pulley at an angle. Is this causing it to squeak real bad at high rpms? And if so can I put shims or washers behind one of the bolts to level it out? I'm in dire need. I don't want one of these belts to rip off on the highway at high rpms....thanks
You can get the belts to tight. But that does not sound like your problem. If you power steering pulley is not lining up with the pulley on your crank and all the other pulleys are lining up, check the pulley on the steering pump. Someone may have rebuilt the pump and did not get the pulley back on completely, or the brackets may be lose, bent, or the wrong application.
If the entire pulley is leaning in and back I would check the bracket first. It may be missing a bolt and the tension of the belt is pulling it in.
Also make sure you have the correct belts. You should check both the angle of the "V" and the width of the belts. Check them against belts that you know are correct, such as from a buddy's car that doesn't have squealing belts. It may also be that your belts are simply worn out. I don't think the misalignment of the pulleys would cause your problem unless the misalignment is very severe. Is the belt that runs in the misaligned pully being frayed or overly worn on its edges? If not it seems unlikely that it's a serious problem. Still it couldn't hurt to fix it if it bothers you. Just don't think it's whats making your belts squeal.
