If you are and want a set of good gears- (Tom's) I hear they'll be getting hard to get soon. The last batch took about a year to get off backorder so word to the wise if you're planning on this job buy them now, the price has already gone up.
I just talked to a buddy last night. Tom has sold off his shop in Ca and moved to Idaho. It is still in business under a new name but I can't remember what it is. They admit they will be selling Tom's stuff but really don't know much about them.
Kenny will be moving with Tom they say and is bouncing back and forth between the two right now. Tom is still developing stuff...supposedly a new aluminum center section that will take 3 series 12 bolt gears.
He was disappointed to hear that Tom isn't heat treating his gears anymore. Apparently the steel formulation has changed on the gears and he's had trouble perfecting a treatment that works. Had a few upset customers when they broke quickly. So he's not doing it anymore until he gets time to work it out.
My buddy wanted 3.55's to replace his 9 year old set of 3:36's that broke finally after who knows how many drag strip launches with a nitroused 502 and a six speed. Pulls great wheelies! He had great luck out of his Tom's BOE rear. Anyway, they had sold their gear stock and he had to buy a set back from the other guy and have them shipped to Tom's to install!
What I heard from a very good source is much of what 427 said. The 373's were back ordered last year just about a year and they're approaching the end of that order now about 2.5 months into it. I have one set left that I may either sell or use to build a diff to bring to Carlilse in Aug.
I know there were a couple of guys looking last year and had to wait about 3 months. Just passing the word, "you snooze, you loose" if you wait until the summer you may be out of luck.
