Steering gear grease?

I just answered this question on C2 this might help,

FYI, the actual Saginaw engineering drawing for the Corvette manual gears says the following: "Lubricate gear with 11 oz lubricant per SSG spec 5695023 thru side cover bolt..."
Of course they are starting with a newly manufactured, bone dry gear, so 11 oz is sufficient to lubricate properly and leave some air space inside the gear for the grease to expand with underhood temperatures.
I am not sure what grease is specified by the old 5695023 spec. The last word that I was given by engineers at Saginaw was to use a good grade of lithium based chassis (ball joint) grease.
Saginaw stopped manufacturing manual gears with the introduction of the C4 Corvette which used rack and pinion steering in 1984. (They actually sold the manual gear business along with the manufacturing equipment.) Lubricants (and greases) have changed and improved in the last 22 years.
