Still got an AC nightmare
Thank you all for your help! Today I removed the passenger side carpet trim (black 81) and got access to the climate control switch. All four vacum lines were intact and seemed not to be leaking. The cable is in good shape also. With the AC on I get all four fan speeds blowing ice-cold air from the two lower outlets and nothing out the vents! When I reassembled the dash many months ago I got air from the vents...I'm at my wits end...

My 77 had that happen. It was the vacum line that goes into the firewall towards the passenger side (behind the distributor). The centerhose, which was the thicker of the 3, was loose enough to leak. When I pushed it in the top vents blew again. Hope this helps.

Did you check those vacuum lines all the way the end? Most of the time, the lines don't leak in a "convenient" location. Once you've made sure the lines are good, the next thing to check is the vacuum "motors" that open and close the doors.
