Default Transmission adjustment

Anyone have info on adjusting a Muncie M21 4 speed in a '69 vette. I have found 4th gear tough to get into from 3rd(Shift lever seems to bind). Moving the linkages around underneath while my wife is shifting eases the 3rd to 4th shift, so I am assuming the linkage is a bit out of adjustment. I read the Haynes info on the 4 speed adjustment, but it seemed vague. Any info would be appreciated....

The stop positions on an M-21 are done internally. There are detents on the inside of the side cover that position the lever in the correct spot.. The shifter adjustment is mainly to make side to side movement of the shifter smooth so it doesn't hit on any of the levers.

My best guess is that you have a worn syncro or slider.

I quess I don't understand why my moving the levers with my hand at the transmission while someone at the lever in the vehicle makes the shifting smoother(car is not running during this test). I actually made the shifting worse by touching the lever bars, which is why I believe the linkages are out of adjustment.
