Default Cam advice - last time

1975 L82, close-ratio 4-speed, 3.55 rearend, 2-1/2 dual exhaust, no cat, and all smog stuff removed, Rebuilt and recurved HEI distributor, Replaced HEI coil with a MSD 48kv (in cap), 2101 Performer intake with rejetted Qjet, World S/R Torquer 67cc heads w/ 2.02/I and 1.60/E valves, and I'll be installing 1.52 roller tip rockers, Stock pistons: aluminum, impact extruded, flat head, notched, Stock compression ratio: 9.0:1

This is it, I'm down to Comp Cams XE262 or XE268. Can someone run some numbers for me. I know the 262 is supposed to be lots of low torque, what's the difference (how much and where's peak) in torque between the two? How about the estimated HP for each.

What's the idle like on the 268?

I won't be racing this, so revving much over 5200 won't happen a lot.

One more thing, Who's using what for head gaskets? And how thick?

Thanks a bunch guys.

I have about the same setup as you do. I love my XE 262. It really depends on what type of driving you will be doing. The 262 runs great and still idles well in traffic. I have always been alittle afraid that the 268 might be a little too much lope. I think that probally both are good cams, this is my second 262 and I'm real happy. I idle about 850 rpms with the 262.

Ken,
I'm running a fairly similar set-up to you, and just dropped in the XE268. Your comment about rarely seeing over 5200rpm really makes me think you'll like the XE262 better. I like my XE268, but you really need to shift at 6000 to take advantage of it. (which I like, but has been giving me occasional trouble with the AC belt). If you notice, the L-82s (at least some years) had a 5600 rpm redline with A/C, and a 6000 rpm redline without A/C. Obviously, the engine is good to 6000 but the AC system is not.

The XE268 seems to have little increase in torque below 2000-2500rpm compared to the L-82 cam, if that helps.

I've got the Comp Cams CS 268h-10 single pattern cam (268/268 @ .006) in my modified L-82 and I like it. I think it's similiar to the XE cam but I'm not sure. It lopes a little at idle and I think it sounds awesome. The low end torque is good but with the other mods I have made the power seems to hit around 3000 rpm.
