Default How much is this gonna cost?

I have already planned to spend about $550, for headers and dual exaust. But how much should i plan to spend for a new cam and heads, which would probably be the next step. I know there are plenty of people here who have done this, mine is a stock 80 auto. Thanks :chevy :chevy   :seeya :seeya ;)

Can't answer how much to plan on spending until you answer a couple of more questions:

1) how many miles on your '80 engine?

2) will you be doing any of the work yourself, or will you someone else to perform all of the work?

3) will you go with aluminum or cast iron heads?

4) do you plan to replace stock aluminum intake manifold?

5) how is condition of related engine parts, like water pump, fan clutch, radiator and radiator support?

6) does your vette have A/C?

You can figure $700 for a good set of complete cast iron heads, or $900 for aluminum. Add $120 for aluminum intake like Edelbrock Performer, $100 for gaskets and sealants, $200 for a camshaft & lifter kit, $100 for new roller tip rocker arms, $60 for a true roller timing set(chain and gears), $35 for rebuilt water pump, $85 for new fan clutch(NAPA), $??to repair rusted out radiator support or radiator. Are pushrods OK to reuse, or will they need replaced?(maybe another $50) New one piece rubber oil pan gasket $30.(these usally have to be replaced, since pulling the timing cover to change camshafts will usually damage the pan gasket) If you pull the pan, will you want to replace the $25 oil pump 'while you're at it'? If yes, may also want to install a new $10 steel oil pump drive shaft Add additional $$ for engine oil & filter, new air filter, new gas filter, new spark plugs and wires, rotor and cap???? All of above assumes you do the work yourself, these are simply rough #s on cost of parts.

You get the idea here.

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of info i was looking for. I just wanted some rough estimates on parts. I will be doing the work myself so labor charges souldn't figure in. I just need to know what my financial limitations are and when i should start the overhaul on my engine.

The engine has 66,000 miles on it
cast iron heads
