I was working on my '78 today. I removed the distributor cap and rotor to inspect it and noticed that the bushings on the weights are pretty much gone, would this cause any performance problems? Thanks .
I agree that worn bushings will affect the timing or performance, but I am not sure how that is done. I think that the worn bushings may either be out of round, which would cause some type of eccentric movement of the springs, which may effect the timing curve, or when the weights move during rpm.
Somewhere in that unprofessional opionion is one of the answers to the questions. Hopefully you can get some of the more experienced distributor/ignition people to chime in.
KDF, thats exactly what I meant by Altered or Erratic. With the holes out of round the weights will get more of a Cam effect than a rotation in the plane it is designed to move in. This will have the effect of changing the advance curve or not advancing at all if any. New Springs and weights will fix it up. Checking out the bushings while in there is a good idea
thanks six and kdf, guess that's why I had a hard time setting the timing. Do you think that anything else could be worn in the distributor since the bushings were in that condition?
I have also read on the forum that distributor end play will cause the timing to be erratic. I believe that this is the gap between the distributor drive gear and the distributor housing. If you notice that the timing is bouncing around the set point at idle the thread I was reading was indicating that this was the cause of it.
The advance curve kit comes with bushing and springs and new weights for under 10 bux,Also Get some timing tape or make your own.
Recurving your distributor, is easy, and makes a hell of a lot of difference in low to midrange. But remember an aggresisive advance curve is going to require premium fuel.
