I have a chance to pickup a hurst shifter for $80. But it's just the shifter, no linkage arms. In other words, the shifter and mount but nothing to connect the bottom of the shifter to the trans.
Does anyone know if I can get away with using my existing linkage arms on the Hurst shifter? I've heard the Hurst shifter is a better way to go but this seems like half the package. Will the stock linkage arms work?
You will need the Hurst Install Kit at a minimum. You might check the numbers on the shifter and handle to see if they are Vette pieces. If not it will be likely a difficult fit.
Factory linkage is heavier than Hurst aftermarket linkage and attaches different too.
I'm in the middle of putting a Muncie in my (originally) automatic '70. I bought a Hurst Competition Plus shifter for it and the installation kit. I also possess a Hurst Indy shifter which currently resides alongside a Ford Toploader. The two shifters are THE SAME except for the bolt stops on the Comp. plus unit. Since the Hurst shifter is essentially a completely different unit than a factory shifter it won't bolt to the stock bracketry and cannot be used with stock linkage. You can buy the installation kit from Summit for $139, you might do better to find a used one on ebay or something. This kit includes a plate that bolts directly onto the tailshaft so that the transmission and shifter dont move independently; there's also a spacer that moves the shift lever about 3/8" to the right. As for whether or not $80 is a good deal for the shifter, you can probably buy a new Indy unit for about that much from Summit or Jeg's.
Just So You Know, Its My Understanding Hurst Does Not Sell Rebuild Parts Or Individual Parts For Their Shifters, Just A Rebuild Service Which Requires That You Send Your Shifter To Them. So If The Shifter You Are Looking At Has Any Worn Parts, Probaly Not A Good Deal. I Dont Know What The Service Costs, But Needless To Say More Expensive Than Replacing A Worn Part Or Two. So Much For Cutomer Service Or Appreciation. I Hate Companies That Hold You Hostage.

Your understanding is WRONG.
Google Hurst Shifters, go to Parts Link and you will find all the parts you need - shift arms, mounting plates, even small parts bag.
BTW, for correct fit in a C3, you need the Comp/Plus shifter made for your year and transmission.
I STAND CORRECTED, WHICH IS GREAT AS I HAVE A SHIFTER THAT NEEDS PARTS. MY INFO CAME FROM THE HURST SHIFTER WEB SITE SOME TIME BACK WHEN I WAS RESEARCHING WHICH SHIFTER WOULD WORK FOR THE VETTE. I MUST HAVE MISSED SOMETHING. I TAKE BACK WHAT I SAID ABOUT HURST! THANKS FOR THE INFO.
