Default Engine out, now what?

Aside from my original plan of:
-cleaning, degreasing & painting the engine/engine bay
-POR-15 a few things
-changing all the gaskets
-rebuilding front suspension

Is there anything else I should do? This is my first time doing anything this major! It ran perfectly fine, so I'm not sure if I want to pull the heads....yet

Also, while I had the engine on the stand, I flipped it upside down...I'm such a noob, but I assume that this was OK?

I flipped it back right side up, (wish the rotating assembly had some kind of ball bearing setup) this took A LOT of effort.
Also, as you can see in the pic, the oil pan is dented up, I'd like to bang it back into shape...

My goal is to have it ready by mid-May, & I'm gearing up for NCRS regionals this August & the National Event next year in Boston (actually Marlboro).

Excellent!! Wasn't to bad, was it? Buy plenty of engine degreaser and a strong nozzle sprayer and get busy. Don't be scared to jump in take stuff off!! Now is the time to check that motor out good while it is out! Also replace your front tranny seal right behind the torque convertor.

Good luck, and your in for a long project with all that work you listed!!

well are you just doing a dress up, or some upgrades?

If just a dresss up, then remove the pan, bang out the dents, and then ensure the mating suface is completely flat, new gaskets and re install.

remove the exhause manifolds have them blasted and paint with a high tem factory grey paint ( eastwood Company)

Remove and replace gasket around the timing chaoin cover or anywhere else you see leaks. drain and clean the block, prime and paint chevy orange im mulitple coats, remove intal or maks off whichever.

Repalce the motor mounts,

premove and paint the pulley black

clean or replace the dispstick

if you are gonne go ver the bottome end there there is whole additional list of thisns to do dependiong on your view of preventatiove maint. and how many miles the engin has on it

I don't know if you have issues with your heater, but have you thought about messing with your heater core? That is a project that can be hard to do with the engine in place.
