I can't say I've ever seen a spring loaded stud girdle. Would you mind posting a link to one? The goal of a stud girdle is rigidity, I can't see where any kind of spring would be appropriate. Are you sure you're not thinking of a "rev kit" wherein additional springs are installed in the lifter galley between the underside of the head and the lifter? Stud girdles are rigid fixtures tying all the rocker studs together in a stud mounted rocker arm arrangement. Personally, if you're going to go to that much effort, the cost of stepping up to shaft mounted rockers isn't that much difference and the benefit is significant.
This is my crane stud girdle and yes there are a few tiny springs that push the bars open when the through bolts are released but the springs do nothing with the functioning of the stud girdle. When the girdle is snugged down the tiny springs are compressed.

I had to use Moroso's U-bolt style due to my centerbolt heads. They also have them for older chevy's, but I wouldn't recommend them unless you have no other choice. The U-bolts just are a PITA .... too many freaking nuts to tighten .
