Default How to replace '79 shift indicator?

1979 shift indicator needle not connected to shifter.
Have replacement indicator.
How to open up console, and reconnect/replace, without screwing things up?

i did this twice on my 77 once with the stock set up and once with the 700r4 transplant....seems to me that there were some screws that held the lens in place and then the pointer slipped in between two pieces of plastic and it had a "y" or "fork" in that straddled a metal piece...sorry i can 't remember more

I just replaced the power window switch, I think you at least need to do the same as I did:
- remove the passenger chair and maybe the drivers chair too;
- Then remove the three screws holding the side console thingies (whatchamecallem' in English?): you can see and access the indicator stuff now. But...
- to actually do something with it you need to unscrew the armrest as well, so you can lift the shifter console part and
- unscrewing it from the gauge console part will help too.

Not too hard to do, just a pita to get lined up neatly when putting it back together. After that you're on your own: I only know how to replace the windows switch, sorry.

Good luck!

Oh yeah... make some pictures for us!

You should be able to get at it from the passengerside. Remove the skirt. Should see a steel casement right under where the lens with drive, park, reverse,etc, is. Two bolts one at the front and one at the rear...undo them. Remove the casement...indicator goes inside. When reinstalling line it up so it hits the shifter in the right spot.

Still not sure exactly how indicator stays in. Snuck it in, in proper position, adjacent to shifter ;
getting everything back down without anything moving, or pinching console wires, was the difficult part. Approached from passenger side, didn't have to pull seat out.

Really? In my case the skirt had a third screw right behind the seat. Lucky you!

Anyway, good thing you managed to replace it.
