I just got a 1982 vette, silver and maroon two tone, great condition. The best part is I got it from my aunt, who got it from my grandpa, who bought it brand new with no miles in 1981. Its now got 21K and my grandpa is helping me get it cleaned up again after having set in a garage for the last 5 or so years. Anyways, the headlights are stuck in the open position, and they wont go down. We think its a problem with the vacuum line, but not sure what. Any ideas what it could be, what to look for, and possible solutions?
Congrats! Sounds like it'll be a nice new car for you.
I would guess one of two things. First, there is a bypass switch on the bottom of the dash board, right under the steering wheel. The button should be in the up position. if it's down, it'll keep the lights open even when the car is running. Be aware that if the engine was stopped with the lights up, they'll stay that way until you run it again. Gramps should have remembered that
Just as likely are the vacuum hoses. On a car this age, they are probably deteriorated even with the low miles. There are trouble shooting guides on corvettefaq.com or you can buy a tubing replacement kit from Dr. Rebuild or one of the other vendors that also comes with a diagram on where they go.
One of the above will probably take care of your problem
