L81

This is a stupid question, but what does L81 stand for. I think 81 is the year, but L???

Don't really know for sure, but most all Chev S/B engines in corvettes had an L preceeding the number, ie: L88, L82, and L48.

The L81 engine was unique to 1981 corvette, and is an L48 with the 1980 California 305 exhaust manifolds, Magn. valve covers, and an ECM controled carburetor and distributor.

It's just an RPO code, like L-88, FE7, etc. Even Z-28 was an RPO code.
