Has anyone out there replaced there original gas gauge with a Sunpro?? I recently replaced my tired old gauge with a sunpro gauge and I am getting crazy readings. When I initially turned the ignition key on it said the tank was full but I know it was not. So.. I filled the tank which took 6 gallons and now it says I have between 1/2 & 3/4 ??
The original gauge had 2 wires (pink & tan). Per the schematic in the manual the pink is 12volts and the tan is from the sending unit. The new gauge has a 12 volt, a negative and S for sending unit connection. I hooked them up and so far getting crazy readings. Any suggestions on to wire this?
the guage and the sending unit might not be calibrated for each other.
the stock sending unit should have 0 Ohms at empty and 90 Ohms when full, what is your new guage set up for. (it should say somewhere in the paperwork)
I think chris75stingray may have the answer. I checked the Summit Racing description of the fuel gauge and it is 240 ohms empty / 29 ohms full. They have another one which does not state the ohms but it is black. Not what I'm looking for. I'll give them a call today. I replaced all other gauges with sunpro (white) which is why I need the fuel gauge white. They have a sending unit for this gauge but I think the tank needs to be dropped to replace it. Didn't want to get into that.
That would explain why the guage went down (from full to 1/2 to 3/4) when you put more gas in. The stock sending unit gives more resistance the more gas you put in the tank but your guage is looking for less resistance the more gas you put in the tank.
No, you have two choices, get a guage that is set to work with your stock GM sending unit (0 ohms empty, 90 ohms full ) or get the sending unit for your guage and replace the stock GM unit with the one made for your guage.
Great thread
Can anybody tell me where to measure the ohms
Im having a similar problem.
My 73 reads 1/4 tank but when I fill it up it only takes about 8 gallons
Its a 18 gallon tank.
Thanks.
ps: 7t6vette ... I diddnt mean to hijack your thread... just seemed like we have a similar problem
Bob, ya got to do that at the sending unit. best way is to remove it so you can manipulate the float. check it with an ohm meter. Or, you can drive it almost empty, measure it at the unit (provided you can get to it) and them put in a 1/4 tank, check it, 1/2 tank, check ...etc...
Maybe measure from the wire on the fuel guage is easier
That's what makes the Corvette Forum so great. It's like being able to take my care in for repair on something I can't figure out and not being charged a fortune. I always get the straight answer..no BS. Replies like yours just add to my future troubleshooting knowledge. I'll take all I can get.
