Great thread with lots of pics~! Question for you... Bubba had gotten to the steering befor i got her. He took the power steering pump out and hoses and left the box in. The steering column now has wobble issues, which i believe to be a bearing somewhere so have I have to have it rebiult. My question is, can i just hook new hoses up and the new pump, and use it like it was never taken off????
If you get the time to reply it would be great. Thanks.
John
John, If the PS was removed and correctly converted to manual steering, the pitman arm, center link(relay rod) SHOULD have been changed to the correct manual parts. Doesn't sound like that was the case. Why was it removed, bad control valve, Ram, pump, hoses??? the box is the same for manual and PS and is corvette specific. If you have play in the box now you will when you connect the correct parts to it. Check the rag joint for play also.
If you need any help let me know.
Gary, i know as a fact, that it wasn't removed and switched to a manual setup strictly for the fact that they took the power steering out because he wanted more horsepower out of his new motor (bubba). The play is in the actual tilt/telescoping portion of the column...
past that i am not even too sure about the play in the box because i have yet to drive it any long length of time. I was just wondering whether i should just pull it when i pull the column and rebiuld it reguardless... just because it is a power steering box that hasn't had fluid in it for 10 years. It has sat for 9 1/2 of those ten, but none the less... just wondering. Let me know what you think.
Thanks for your help this forum rocks~!
The control valves are a hit or miss deal. If it is leaking from a bad seal or O ring that's one thing but if the bore is pitted then it could be a waste of time and money. I rebuilt the valves on my cars without a problem but I'm not sure if the kits are still being sold. I'd have to check with my supplier and see.
Zip has a valve rebuild kit (seals, boot and strap) #ZSC-323 for $22.00. Should I take it apart and check out the bore first?
Thanks.
WOW. THis is some great info! But, the pics aren't up anymore.
Gary,
From all of the initial searching I have done on this forum about steering box adjustment, it looks like you are the man to ask!
I just bought my 1967. It looks to me like the steering box has either been restored, or is new. But the steering is a little "numb" when driving. I think that I might need a lash adjustment. One of my friends that has a few C2's told me it is the worm gear. Could anyone shoot me a pick on where the adjustment screw is? Any tips would be helpfull as well! Thanks!
Gary,
As usual, great work on everything you do! If I wasn't planning on doing a Jeep box this winter I would dive into mine right now. You guys cause me more work from all these great posts on how to do this and that! I love it!
Bernie
Scott,
Check the kits good before you buy. Some kits are only seals and O rings others sell 2 kits to rebuild them and still not all the parts are supplied. I don't know what is in the Zip kit? Here are some pictures to help you along. Just mark parts as you go along.
Ok guys here are the pictures back.
One thing to look at when you remove or buy a box. There are some on the market that look llike a stock saginaw box but they are not. I have one here and had another ready to be shipped to me. These are sold as "NEW" but buyer beware. Lets just say if I had a choice of a "new" box and one of my boxes, I'd use mine. I know maybe I'm a little biased, maybe not.
