I'm looking to buy a short block crate motor. I've learned that GM Performance parts doesn't offer one except the ZZ4, That's a little out of my $ range. Anybody here know of a good place to find one? I would like a 4-bolt main block. Even if anyone knows a trustworthy local shop that can build one, please let me know.

This is a starting point. I don't know exactly what you want, but it is 4 bolt and the late model one piece seal. It is the start of a good base 350 street motor.

Hey Thanks. That sounds pretty good. I'm wanting to build a mild cam street 350. I was looking to use Double Hump heads and a cam with about 450"/.460" lift. Flat tops would be great, but I know I'm not gonna find that cheap. I did talk to a guy at a company called Wholesale engines and he said he could build me a 2-bolt roller short block w/ fuel pump boss for $1000. http://www.wholesale-engines.com/chevyblocks.htm
But, I've never heard of them and not sure if I want to take my chances.
Anybody else have any ideas?
theenginestore.com offers short blocks. I have not dealt with them personally, but others on this forum have. Kevin does answer questions promptly. They are in the top 2 to build my engine.
I can think of three outfits I WOULDN'T consider until I see how msvetteman's situation is resolved.
If I were seriously looking right now, I would start w/Troy Scott--Stillwater, Ok.

Check out dixiemailorder.com That is the catalog company for Wheeler power products out of Jacksonville Fla. They build everything from short blocks on up. I have one of their motors in my '69 Camaro. If you are interested in checking the motor out that I put together, PM me. I'm in Warner Robins.
I have been monitoring the post from msvetteman. Man what a mess!
I knew I would get some great information from you guys. The 2 previous recommendations both look great. I may take you up on the invite 69camfrk. Which one did you get from them? The 383 stroker shortblock looks awesome.
Thanks for all the info guys, I've been fighting this battle for months.
Check out T and L engine, bought my 383 turn key stroker their, pretty sure they would build a short block for you. http://www.tandlengines.com/index.html

I got the 355 performance series short block. It winds up like no tomorrow. I shift usually around 6 grand and have had it to 7 grand. I used the Holley systemax 2 setup from Jegs and love it. Their aluminum heads flow well and as a whole for what all the kit came with is a bargain. Just give me a shout if you want to come down this way.
I just had my engine rebuilt locally here in my home town. Here in AZ we have a local corvette website and I got recommendations from there (I'm newer - 2 yrs - to the area here, so I've needed help in finding good local vendors). Do you have a local vette web or car club you could contact in GA? They might be able to provide some great insight Good luck
I am trying to avoid having to have any machine work done because I don't really know any good machine shops in the area. I used to manage a Goodyear shop in Atlanta and had the best machine shop and vendors at my fingertips. Not anymore. I really would like to be able to bolt something together and be happy with the results. HERE'S THE DEAL:
2 kids in school
Budget-$2500 firm (to assemble longblock, including intake & new carb)
A lot of parts I can swap off the old motor such as flexplate, balancer dist. etc.
Majic#'s - 300HP, 350lbs torque
I think this could be done.
I look at the GM crate motor with 290HP (http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...h.asp&x=47&y=7) and it seems sooo easy, but I really want something a little stronger.
This thing is driving me crazy!

Unless you are concerned about matching #s, you can get a brand new 350 HO deluxe from GM for $3300, I bought one for my street rod. Comes complete from air cleaner to oil pan, and even has the flex plate on it. Has a brand new HEI distributor, wires, everything. Here's mine: (BTW - it comes with a long waterpump)
