My odometer does not work on my '73'. I cannot even reset it. It has not worked since I've owned it and now that the big jobs are done, I want to fix it.
I see the little **** on the bottom of the dash. I presume you just pull and twist to reset it. When I do nothing happens, and it certainly does'nt change mileage as I drive. My speedometer works fine. Any ideas on the fix?
That's exactly what mine was like the first time. I pulled it out and found that a small clip had fallen of the trip number wheels and the reset gear was loose inside. Took about 3 minutes to fix the problem with the speedo. Took about 4 hours total to get the dash out and back in place (if you have to do it more than once your times get better with experience....)
Please don't think I'm trying to be a smart aleck, but have you tried pushing the **** rather than pulling? The reason I say so is because my recollection is that the cable and **** simply act as a plunger that trips the odometer and allows it to reset to zero. I am assuming here that when you say odometer, you're talking about the trip odometer, which is separate from the lifetime mileage odometer. You might also want to remove the trip odometer cable assembly to make sure it's not just gummed up or corroded to the point that it won't work. If so, cable assemblies are available from most of the aftermarket suppliers, but they're a bit spendy - $75-$80. I think the trip odometer cable simply unscrews from the back of the speedometer housing and is fairly easy to access.
OK, so how do you reset the trip odometer -- push or pull? Mine does not work but I can turn the **** and the 1/10 miles turn. I do not know how to reset it quickly and it does not turn when running. Any ideas?
