Was just looking at the Hooker catalogue and noticed they had 3 different types of muffler listed for the 4 inch pipes. Glasspack, Reverse flow and a new max flow design.
Reading on a bit it said that the Max flow mufflers gives a 23% power increase over open headers.
So.....
Does this mean for best performance you should run the pipes with mufflers and what do you guys run?
Another section says the mufflers are easily removed for racing. This would lead me to believe running open would be best....
I have the STS baffles in mine. Although i havent fired it up and heard them yet. When i started building my car (2 years ago) i read on the forums that many people like these and they sounded good. Check them out at STS Baffles
Maybe some others who have used them will get there testimonies.
The guy there was very friendly and helpful when i got mine. I also had him make me some stainless heat shields.
As far as 23% more power than open headers i find that hard to believe. I found a pic of them and they just look like a glorified glasspack. I also noticed that they say a 427 C3 gained 40hp. but they compared it to an aftermarket header and exhaust and didnt say what the brand was or anything.
Yeah pretty much. I dont remember where it was but i seen a dyno run that made up my mind on buying them. It was done with the hooker sidepipes. At the time hooker had 2 different mufflers. The glass pack sounded better but robbed like 45hp if i remember tight. The turbo was quieter but robbed less HP. The STS only lost 4hp compared to running with no muffler. I believe the ran the pipe on that run but not sure.
This may vary depending on how much motor you have. I dont recall what kind of motor was in the car they did this on but it seems like it was a BB.
Jotto, my car was one of those dyno tested and the STS baffles are the way to go. I lost over 90 horsepower with both the Hooker glasspacks and reverse flows on a 350 rwhp 502. I am sure the max flows are better but there is still not as much open area as the baffles. Plus, the baffles are tuneable for both flow and sound by drilling or totally removing the end cap. I love the sound and the hp. My 502 is now a 615 hp at the crank motor and only lost 12 horses over open tubes.
You misunderstood what i was talking about. I was referring to the new max flow hooker mufflers looking like glorified glasspacks. I have the STS and i remember my dad seeing them for the first time and asked me if i was planning on digging holes with them. lol
