I just installed new Accell 8mm Super Stock wires and a new Accell tan Distributor cap and rotor.
The problem is that the wires will not stay connected to the distributor cap. The dust boot is down too far and not enough of the electrical connector is exposed. I ended up putting my old aftermarket distributor cap back on. The wires seem to stay on better.
I called JEGS where I bought everything from (great 24 hour service) and I was told to spray a little wd40 into the boot and force it back down the wire thus leaving more of the connector exposed. Well this is easier said than done. I got the coil wire to move but gave up after trying three other wires with no result.
Anyone done this and know the trick to doing it without damaging the wires ??
I will only struggle so long with my bare hands before I start trying pliers.
Those cheap boots that they include with those wire can be a real pain in the behind. Here is what I use to do with those and this is serious. Not a joke. I use either motor oil or saliva(spit). Lube the wire with either one and slide the boot onto the wire. Leave at least an inch or more of wire past the end of the boot. Press the wire as far as you can down into the cap and slide the boot down onto the cap. For the record, I prefer the motor oil, but spit does work well in a pinch. WD-40 is not any more slick than water and doesn't work well for this.
Steve,
I had the same problem when I put Accells on my vette. I found the fit of the connections was terrrible. I tried all tricks possible with no luck. I eventually went to MSD wires and swapped out the accells. I also found while swapping out the wires that 3 of the boots at the spark plug had melted from the inside out. They were just goo. I am happy with the MSD's better look and much better fit.
I talked to Accell this AM. The boots are made to slide if need be.
I ended up taking a very, very small flathead screwdriver and with a little silicone and slid the screwdriver along the wire under the boot as far up as it would go and broke whatever was sticking and then I was able to move the boot without any problem.
My accel boots were soft and thin from header heat also before I changed to Livewires. These boots are thicker and still like new. Accel stuff is more show than go for me.
I have had problems with my Accell 8 mms. I guess you get what you pay for! No deals with plug wires. My distributor boots have arced to my air cleaner, the plug boots don't hold on and they are generally not durable. Definately more show than go.
I bought Accel 300+ race wires, and they fit great. They were already cut to fit, and even next to my headers under street racing conditions they have held up great. I guess maybe their cheaper wires aren't as good, but as somebody already mentioned, you get what you pay for...
the 300+ wires were about $60 cut to fit.
Jeff
P.S. No wire will hold up if touching a header, make sure you have proper clearance.
