Default Question For LARS about a Carb...

Mr Lars.. I have seen many post on here about you and Carbs, so I figure you are the guy to ask this to. I have an 81 vette with the computer controled carb, and I am going to a Non computer Q-jet. What I wanted to know from you is if you have a done Q'jet for sale or who would you suggest I goto to purchase one. I wanted one that was set up a little richer for my car than the original, and also I wanted to know what number carb you would suggest. Some guys tell me to go with something that came stock on say a 73 or earlier. I have an electric choke on mine as you know, and would like to keep it that way, ect. So, if you can, suggest to me which carb would best work out for me. Thanks Chris..

Use any 1975 through 1979 Q-Jet off of a Chevy passenger car (not truck). These Q-Jets produce an outstanding level of performance, and they will accept the electric choke out of your '81 carb. Rebuild the carb with a new float, set it up to its stock specs, and set float level to .420". It will run very well. Sorry, but I don't have any carbs for sale.

Hey Lars, what's kind of problems are there with the 1980 non-computer controlled carbs?

No problem with the 80 carb. I just have a personal preference for the big jetting on the 75-79 carbs.

Do the '80 carbs use the same rods as the 75-79? If they do, changing the jets is $8 and 15 minutes.

Kalway, I gotta ask, where did you find the jets? I've been to 3 different auto parts stores in San Diego County searching for Q-Jet jets, and none of them know what I'm talking about. The Napa super store right down the street from where I work told me they don't carry anything except rebuild kits for it.

Short of ordering from online, I don't know where to get them.

Jets? Edelbrock part numbers 1970 - 1978.

Just go to Autozone or Kragen and tell them you need an Edelbrock part and tell them 197x (the last two digits are the jet size so a .75 jet would be 1975). They're like $8 for a pair. The ugly M rods are only available in 50M and 48M from Edelbrock and they're 1914 or something like that. You can do a part number search on Kragen's website and just start plugging in numbers like 1914 and you'll eventually find it. All Edelbrock parts associated with q-jets are 19xx.

Napa doesn't have any Edelbrock q-jet parts.

Thanks, man...Everybody here at the auto parts stores flip out as soon as I mention that it's for a Rochester Q-Jet, and tell me that there's no way they can get parts for it. I've come across ONE guy at the local Pep Boys that was cool enough to let me go in the back to search for radiator hoses for the application I was trying to match for my '67 Jaguar (these 2 short hose sections that go from a 2" neck down to a 1" neck, and we just cut a hose off of a Firebird to fit).

Other than that, unless you've got a part number (and sometimes even WITH the part number) the guys start treating you like you don't know the parts you need for your car.

I told a guy I needed a distributor cap & rotor that fit onto my '74 small block Corvette..."Sorry, don't have it."

"How about for a '74 small block Chevelle?"

"Oh, we've got it."

Yeah...Gotta love the bubbas behind the counter. Thanks for the tip, I'm going to go look for the jets for my Q-Jet now.
