Default Temp sensor question

I have a temp sensor on each side of my heads.. one is a single pronge on the driver side. on the passenger side is a dual prong sensor.. any idea as to which one does what'? there is no part number that i can find for the one on the passenger side, so for now i just plugged that side and i am only running the one sensor.. i haven't started the car yet so im not to sure as to what is what.

Ya didn't mention what year it is, but I'd suspect one is water temp and one is oil pressure...I'd have to go look at my engine to figure which is which...

The one on the drivers side is for your temp. guage. I believe the one on the passenger side is for an optional electric cooling fan. I'm not sure but this is what I have been told. I also plugged the one on the passenger side.

On my 72 the one on the drivers side is for temp. gauge and the one on on the pass side is for the tcs system.

The tcs system is designed to limt the timeing untill the engine temp. is hot and the trans. is in high gear. Most of these system have been disconected by now.

with Hoosiervette.

My ride is also a 79 L82. The passenger side switch that has two wires is for the aux rad fan and the driver side is for the temp guage as Hoosiervette said.

I can't use the original sensor that i have because the dart heads that i installed have a smaller diameter fitting for the sensor.. I want to switch to using electric fans tho, so if i call dart to try to get a part number for this switch, could i run my aftermarket fans off of that sensor? Also do you know what temp this sensor activates the fan to turn on? This was a dealer option correct?

I have an '80 L-82 and yes, that passenger side sensor is for the auxilliary cooling fan. I also did the Dart head swap and found the sensor holes were set up for smaller fittings.

The solution for me was to hog out the hole and run a proper sized tapered pipe tap down in there. You can open it up to the tap hole size (from a pipe tap drill chart) with a die grinder, small straight carbide cutter, and a steady hand (work SLOWLY). I would not trust a drill bit in a hand drill personaly. You do not need to remove much metal at all. You are very close once the original threads are gone. Tap the holes and clean out the chips. It worked for me.

Or just pay a competent machine shop to do it.

Yes, the passenger side sensor is for the auxiliary electric fan.

Just go to the local hardware store and get a 1" long or so brass nipple the size that will fit the heads and then get a brass female coupler that fits the nipple on one end and fits your temp sender on the other. I had to do this with my Dart heads for both sending units. Actually works out pretty good since it extends the sending units out a little and make them easier to access.

You don't need a reducer. You need a 3/8" thread temp sensor. Several companies make them with different temp settings. It's nothing more than a on-off switch. For instance, on at 195- off at 175. It has no relationship with the sensor that operates your temperature gauge. I have dual spals using two sensors, one in a head controlling one fan, the other in the intake controlling the other fan. Both sensors are from the same manufactorer...on at 195 off at 175. I also have remote 5mm leds mounted in my dash allowing me to moniter when the fans are operating. Works pretty good. The spal controller operates differently but wasn't what I was looking for.

Should a dab of anti-sieze or silicon be put on the threads when installing the temp senders?
