I read the installation instructions for the installation of my new feul pump. It mentions to lubricate the pump lever where the push rod makes contact and the area where the cavity where the lever sticks out? What is the best type of grease to use? Does one need to lubricate the push rod before placing the rod inside the block?

Assembly lube if you have it...that would be the best.
Vasoline.
Any light graphite grease (ummm...dont get it on anything white).
Even a light coating of axle grease is OK.
If you do lube the rod very well, it will help hold the rod in place upon installation of the fuel pump.
Its actually not anything as drastic as it may seem...been done many years, many times without lube at all...its just added insurance per se'.
