how is the mirror attached on a 71, mine had some aftermarket mirrors on it so I now have 4 holes in the door. was the metal part of the door frame threaded for the mirror screws/bolts? also does adding a mirror on the passenger side really help vision? the mirrors on my 81 were basicly usless. it looks like the early shark mirrors sit up higher on the door.
here is a picture of my drivers door, the two center holes seem to have bolts broken off in them. the two outer holes will be filled. they were for the aftermarket sport mirror. I see in the parts catalog there is a mirror mounting bracket. does this go inside the door? if so what holds it in place?
some mirrors have a rubber mount that expands when screwed......the mounting plate i believe goes on the outside and the mirror attaches with a set screw..... i'm about 94.3% sure
the two centre bolts look more like rivetts, so i would advise that you think twice about drilling them out. i'll go and have a look at the doors on my 76 (which is spread around my shed in lots of little bits, and see what they are like for you)
looks like Bubba has been at work on my drivers door too! Someone has gone and drilled a large hole in my drivers side for the remote cable to be fitted from a 78 side mirror.
I cant see or feel any metal plates on the inside that would require some rivetts, but there is a metal frame that runs inside which the fibreglass is bonded onto. I am of the opinion that the rivetts may be used for holding the firbreglass in place on this frame.
When i removed the mirrors from my car, i had to remove the windows, so that i could get in to the small screws that secured the mirror on from the inside out. was a real pig of a job!
my two holes in the center seem to have some sort of metal bushing with some sort of bolt broken in them. I guess I need to drill them out.
Do not drill out those rivets unless you are wanting to remove the door skin.
The two rivets in the door are countersunk and it holds the metal plate on the inside of the door. The plate is under a metal channel that is a part of the inner door frame. The pass. side mirrors are add on and they are held in place with well nuts (rubber inserts that expand when tightened). From some of the other post I have read here I get the felling that the pass. side mirror has a lot of vibration while moveing down the road. And I think it is because of lack of support because the wellnuts will not hold as firmly as the metal plate will.
