Default Mechanical fuel pump install

I tried to search for this but im rushing b4 i have to go to work. when i tried to install my mechanical fuel pump on my 79 L-82 this afternoon, it didn't want to line up.. i was kind of rushing but all in all it didn't seem like it wanted to work with me.. i have a stock fuel pump for my car, but the arm on the pump does not want to travel much.. is this normal? should i turn the engine maybe so the pin inside the engine gives me more room? any suggestions??? thanx in advance

i had trouble with mine too, you need to somehow hold the rod up out of place while you slip the fuel pump actuator arm underneath it. tricky to do, but just take your time.

not sure about turning the engine, but you may have to. It could be at the exact point where cam lobe is pushing it down.

you might beed to bump the motor a bit to get the high spot on the lobe past the pump pin. I like to put some axel greaso on the shaft to get it to stick when you put it in the motor, then the pump should be a bit easier to mount. Remember the pump travel is only about a half inch because thats al the lift on the cam lobe is, not much more

Did this about 6 weeks ago. You will need to bump the engine till you get the most lift on the pump rod. Once you get a finger under the rod, stick a long, thin screwdriver in there to hold it up while you slide the pump into place. If your cam is in the right place, there should be enough room to get the lever under the rod and pull the screwdriver out. It was definitely a frustrating process, but you will figure it out. Good luck!

With both mounting bolts in the fuel pump holes, get the fuel pump arm under the rod. Then start the bolts and tighten them down evenly. It will pull the pump into place regardless of where the lobe is.

If you look at the front of your engine there should be a bolt hole that goes right to your fuel pump acuating rod. sometimes there is a short bolt there, sometimes not. you can push the rod up and then screw a long bolt in there to hold the rod in place. then you can put the fuel pump on, with the arm located properly against the rod. then just tighten the fuel pump up. DON'T FOGET TO REMOVE THE BOLT HOLDING THE ROD IN PLACE.

I placed my engine at #1 TDC and greased the rod. The grease held the rod in place, and the pump went in fairly easy after that.

I use bearing grease to hold the rod in place. It works every time.

Exactly what I did. Worked like a champ. I can take a pic of the spot that is described if anyone would like to see this.

take a old hack saw blade and bend it in a u shape, use this to hold your rod up, your pump should slide in under the saw blade and into position. good luck
