I have the zz502/502 motor in my 78 and would like to convert it from V-belt to serpentine (my v-belt system squeels EVERY time the car is started, sometimes for 2-3 minutes and it's embarassing), but am not willing to pay March's price for the kit. GM also has a kit but it's like $600, so while searching around I found this...
It is for 1965-1970 BBC Vettes, but since I have a BB in mine, I figure it should fit. I would need 4 total pulleys (crank, alternator, water pump and power steering), so I would have to find a pulley for my power steering, but will this actually work? Can I use the alternator to tention the system? Do you think I'll have slippage issues?
I too, am looking for what to do about the pulleys. I have looked at the GM -part # 12498741-It includes the power steering pump, alt and water pump(cast iron reverse flow) and everything else needed. At GM Parts Direct is only $475.97-not too bad a price. However it's NOT very good looking but then it's not almost 2k like the March stuff.
I'm going to be running dual electric fans and from my understanding will be able to run either a short or long waterpump.
I did see this set up on a Chevelle -and I would like to find who makes it.

My understanding of the GM kit is that it is derived from the truck application, unlike the GM small block kit, so I'm guessing it would not fit under the hood as the alternator (and A/C if used) is mounted way high. I just put a March outward mount kit exactly like PolishMike's and it worked out perfect. It is worth the cash. A rep at March told me the kit which used the small GM type II pump with remote reservoir is the only one that would work on a C3 BBC, which was fine by me as I wanted to do that anyway. You can save a few $$ by buying the PS pump / reservoir and reverse rotation W/P from Summit. Worked fine with my 8in Fluidamper too.

WOW, that March set really does look good, but I just can't bring myself to spend the $. Anyone have any idea why it squeels? I know it's coming from the alternator, but can't figure out why. I'm wondering if the alt bracket is bending or something, causing the squeel, but it does go away after a min or two, unless I shut the car off for mor than a few mins, then it does it again for a min or two.
My guess is that its a combination of a couple of things.
I will asume it does not just need the belt tightened.
First I would check to see if the car has a slow short draining the battery when it is shut off.(If it does the alt will have to work extra hard when you start it)
Second is the pulley undersized? if so the pulley may not have enough pulley surface area to belt surface area to handle the load of your alt, especially if it is higher output then original.
Third check the belt. Look at the side that contacts the pulley if it is hard or shinny, change the belt.
Forth check the alt pulley if it shows any ridges or grooves on the surface that the belt rides on, change it.
I work for a company that builds high output alternators and have several pulleys that may help ( http://www.H-O-Alternators.com ) If you have any questions feel free to call me at 1-866-446-8878 ext 102

The short would actually cause the squeel? My battery does die quite often and I can't find the short, there for a while I thought I was leaving my key on because my key does come out when it's not in the lock position. Any idea on how to find the short?
