Pulling onto the interstate the other day and shifted into 3rd then 4th and something did not feel right. I found I was stuck in 3rd. Limped home and found the G clip on 1st and 2nd had broken. I installed new G clips when I restored the car last year. My engine mounts are OK, trans mount is OK. Anybody else had this problem? Is there a better way to fasten the shift rods?
I agree with Paul 75 - If you compare the Hurst to the stock unit, you will see a BIG difference. The Hurst looks like it was designed for an M1 tank - it's beefy :smash: :chevy
Larry, a properly adjusted stock shifter isn't as smooth, IMHO, as a Hurst but it is still a great shifter, just slightly notchier. I am into the originality thing so I like the muncy shifter even though I have driven with both. Switching to a Hurst just because you broke a clip is an extreme measure.
The GM Chassis Service manual gives a nice adjustment procedure that doesn't take very long. Once the linkage is properly adjusted you shouldn't have any binding or missed gears. the whole adjustment takes less than an hour.
I have heard of others who broke clips but no one ever really knows why. Put a new clip in, adjust the linkage and drive the car. :D
I just installed a Hurst this winter. I had a clip break on the drag strip. Stuck in 1st gear. Almost ruined a good day. There was a supplier at the track who had a clip. Installed a new clip and ran 14 more runs that day. I guess it was a bad clip. I carry a spare now. There was no reason for the break it just happened. They where brand new clips
Thanks everyone, your responses made me feel better, I thought something might be busted. I'll install a new clip and readjust. This is a 3 year restoration so everything is still trying to fit together but it is running better everyday. Thanks again.
