Problems with shifter
Another good shifter alignment tool is a kitchen or butter knife, cut to length...pretty cheap too. Just don't use the "good" ones or the wife will kill you.

The stock 4-speed shifter installed on 68-81 Corvettes have no such spring for side loading. The only spring in an OEM 68-81 shifter is the one that holds the t-handle down.
IT GOT STUCK IN THE REVERSE GATE.
I tried for 45 minutes until my arm was tired. I BACKED out onto my street, backed up the dirt road, backed up the driveway, backed into the garage. Tore the shifter apart.... 31 years of rust and crap (after all, the linkages are fairly exposed.
Hurst comp. plus shifter.... greatest investment possible. shorter shifts, no T-handle, and the reverse gate is spring loaded. you push it to the left to get into first, and push it hard left to get reverse (it "clicks" ever so cleanly into the gate, and springs back out when you put it back in neutral.) Get the hurst. you'll love it.
