I need some input on a windshield install in my fully restored 68 coupe. The windshield frame is rust free and fully prepared for installation. One question I have is the installer suggests using urethane instead of the correct roll stripe sealant. Anyone have any input on this? I like the idea of the urethane but the neatness and uniform thickness conserns me with the molding fit and how close the glass fits to the wiper door and dash pad, AL.
urethane comes out like caulk and dries hard like rubber. how thick it is under the glass is dependant on how much you push it into the urethane. There is a install paper on the corvette faq web site that should help you with getting the molding flat on the glass regardless of what you use.

I did a writeup when I replaced mine - it is available on CorvetteFAQ.com. I did a lot of research and used the correct products. It should answer your questions.
[Sorry VETTEVIC - I didn't catch that you had already provided the info]

Super Job!!! Can the install be done with the wiper door on the car in the open position? AL.
With the recent posting - where the owners install ended up with wiper door hitting,
I am letting the pros do it (after talking them deaf on the subject).
They say "urethane", and I say "It better be the right height when done."
If not, I don't have to re-do it.

Are you saying you like the use of the roll sealant or the urethane? AL.
My wiper door panel is still on the car but the trim molding is not, I was told I need to remove the wiper door. Looks to me there is a lot of room, more then enough to install the windshield. AL.
Has anyone ever installed a winshield in a 68 with out pulling the wiper door? My stainless top trim is not installed yet and it looks like there is plenty of room to intall the windshield, AL.
Dont quote me but professionals have to use the urethane by law. urethane has a stronger bond keeps your body in the car on impact. This is what the installer told me when I had my front and rear glass replaced on my 79. That was a big mistake now the glass is lower than the trim. Not bad in the front but the rear looks like crap. I am one of those type of people that just takes it and does not say a word. What I should have said is re do it till it's right. I do my own now and use the tape followed by the urethane around the edges for a good seal. I broke one once after install latter on, and that sucker was hard to get out.

I was told the exact same thing more than once when I was doing my research. If you create a "sandwich" as in the writeup, it will be a good, solid seal at the correct depth - and legal.
A VERY important point for people who need to have the work done by someone else is to find someone who ACTUALLY HAS INSTALLED a C3 windshield. Selecting someone who says "sure I can" but never really HAS is a crap shoot - and only you will loose!
Thanks for the post!!! I was leaning on doing my own with the 3/8" roll sealant and after read the last tow post I think I just may do it my self.
One other thing no one has touch on..... about my earlier post on the wiper door, AL.

This is true on newer cars but not on our C3s. If a shop tells you they will only use urethane go some where else. The strip roll sealant is was the car came with and is cheaper for the installer and problem for you if you need ever to remove it. I had original one removed without breaking it, AL.

Okay, I had my windshield install today by Classic Upholstery & Glass Company. The work was done professionally and I was happy with the whole installation (and thats saying a lot). I'm very picky and the installer, Don did a super job! So in short if anyone is looking to have a windshield installed in a C3 Corvette check out Classic Upholstery & Glass Company you will be glad you did, AL.
I just had the windshield in my '70 replaced by Safelite Auto Glass. They're on the internet; just go to their website and set up an appointment. They CAME TO MY HOUSE and installed mine for $201.00. Took about 2 1/2 hours 'cuz the guy took his time and made sure all the trim pieces fit better than when he took them off. Of course you're not gonna get OEM date-coded glass for that kinda money but I have absolutely no regrets. The new glass was EXACTLY like the old piece but made by a company called Pilkington, and yes I did remove the wiper door and grille, and of course they installed with urethane.
Mike, no but test fitted the side vertical moldings and looked pretty good. The molding installation I have no problem installing and would reather do my self. The install took no time and fit fine with out removing the wiper door, AL.
