The paint on my ’82 is in great shape for a 24 year old car but as often happens – paint on the front and rear end caps is wearing thin. I don’t want to have the entire car painted and am thinking about removing the front/rear end caps and having them repainted. Neither ends show any “wave” signs so I think I’ll re-use them as they are in great shape.
My problem is with the pin-stripes. Can anyone provide experience/advice on the possibility of removing the pin-stripes and re-using them should I move forward with this project? What type of adhesive was used and can I apply an adhesive to re-attach the stripes?
I’ve checked with Phoenix Graphics – only place I’ve found that makes a pin-stripe for the two-tone 81/82 cars...they will only sale me the complete package, body and hood stripes...big $$$
Unfortunately, the original stripes are toast, they can not be removed and re-used. 3M has an extensive selection of stripe tape in rolls that would be much less expensive. Most automotive paint stores sell this product, see if there is a close match on the color sample chart. Good Luck

You could go to a lot of work trying to remove and save the stripes, but you'd be disappointed when it came time to reinstall them. You have to consider the sun has been cooking the adhesive for nearly 25 years.
Unless you're careful, you may be disappointed with your color match on your bumper covers. New paint on these will tend to show the sun fade and age of the color coat on the car.

I left that part of my answer out because I didn't want to look like a killjoy. I hope the paint on your bumpers can be recoated. In order to get the bumper paint to match, you may have to blend into the body a little bit, that's what I did with my car and my paint is 30years old. Blending will mean you'll need new fender stripes as well unless you mask the fender stripes which will cause paint build up around them . A talented painter can do a very good job blending and you won't be able to tell, even with silver (although silver is a bit more challenging).
Find a sign shop that does truck lettering and they should be able to match the color and re-stripe the front piece. It shouldn't be all that expensive either.
A hair dryer and move slowly to remove them. As far as reusing them, no way. Goon gone not to goof off to remove the rest of the the glue residue. Goon gone uses a citrus based solution and goof off uses a acetone based with might damage the paint.
Thanks for the comments guys...hadn't thought much about the paint match...of course the paint match is not that great between the front/rear end caps and the body from the factory!
i worked at a body shop for a while and you would be impressed at how well a good painter can match and blend. The key is to find a good shop and get references. I would check with local car clubs for suggestions on a shop.
if you can't remove the stripes or it looks like it may ruin the paint you can always go over the old stripes with the same size or wider tape stripe. As slong as they have been cleaned well this will work. It is not a permanent solution but if you are eventually going to repaint this will hold you over
