Default 76 A/C Question

Just so you all know, I'm a noob!

I have a 76, and the A/C isn't working because there is no freon in it, and there is no belt attached to the A/c unit. My question is this: Can I put R134a in an A/C unit this old? If not, does anyone know about how much it would cost to convert it to an R134a system?

No you can't just put R134 in there and call it good. the seals, oil and oriface tube have to be changed, that much I know. There are some real AC experts in here that will chime in.

If there is no belt on the compressor Id be wondering why they took it off. Chances are there was a problem with it. Maybe froze or the bearings going bad and making alot of noise.

Runnik, you really need to check out all the AC components since you don't know the exact history, clutch, compressor, drier, blower, etc....

nuthin $$ can't fix tho, LOL

Well, I know it's not frozen, I can turn it with my hand. As to why the guy took off the belt, I have no idea.

your probly turning the pully on the clutch, jump 12 volts to it and see if it turns

Default Turning by hand

The pully will free wheel until the clutch engages on the compressor, which does not necessarly mean there is nothing wrong. Once engaged, it might not move at all. You may want to consider not converting even though you won't be able to charge it yourself. The old system will actually do a better job cooling then converting. As stated, if you do convert, many seals need to be changed, a new compressor will have to be installed, and some orriface who's name escapes me at the moment has to be replaced. The oils in the two systems are different and as I recall, not compatable. On my 76, the air is a drain on the motor. My motor normally runs around 190 degrees. With the air on, it will shoot up between 220 and 230.

Well mstock, thats just a good excuse to go with a new aluminum radiator, electric fans, high flow water pump and of course a bigger alternator
