I am looking to optimize performance and efficiency by running my engine at a preferred temperature. I've got the '79 Chevy 350 L-48 w/ ported original 76cc heads, Holley 4-barrel,alum. intake, Hooker hdrs thru Flowmaster 40s. Stock fuel pump-open air 14" K&N---ALL vacc, smog, a/c, etc. removed. I flushed the radiator, have new upper and lower hoses, new GMPP alum. water pump. The engine runs great! Since re-assembling with a 180 degree T-stat I have run 180-195 tops. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that the cooling works so well given what I've read here, but I can't help but wonder if one of you guys (or gals) has any suggestions for tweaking and tuning the temp for max performance and more importantly engine lube and longevity. I'm running the original stock fan clutch on a Flexilite fan. As per many posts' suggestions I switched to Shell Rotella 10-w-40 this week. Given all this info-- What would my best average operating temp be?
Also- I'm running MSD HEI ignition, Autolite AP26 plugs
I'll be pulling the plugs today and tuning most of the P.M.
I've got to play with the main jets, idles, the usual Holley stuff.
For the first time since owning this car I'm actually considering fuel mileage/ as it applies to perf. and speed!
All opinions welcome!
