Anyone do a Roller cam Retro fit? how did it go and would you do it a gain? What pitfalls did you run into?
Thanks!

I put one in a Gen V 454 stroked to 489, my most recent build. It's been cranked on the run-in stand, not installed in car yet, but sounds great! I had to get custom length pushrods, but that was no big deal. I spent more time getting the crank and cam sprockets lined up probably than most, ended up with a wear plate behind the cam sprocket and a shim behind the cam sprocket (from machine equipment catalog). Had to install thrust button. I left the cam cover off the back of the engine and inserted a dial travel indicator to check the cam end play, then installed the cover (looks like "freeze plug"). The biggest hassle had to do not with the retro-fit cam, but the timing chain cover on the Gen V. Learned some lessons there! I can't speak to longevity, but it is adverised good. I want mine to last, and last. . .

I converted my '71 454 to a hydraulic roller years ago. I think I have about 40K miles on it so far. Took a chance and ordered comps retro fit pushrods (shorter than stock) and they came out spot on.

I started a long thread on this topic a month or so back. Search/Advanced Search/check "archives" - it may already be archived.

Mine was a hydraulic cam retro fit in a '69 sm. block. No pitfalls, just needed shorter pushrods (which came with the kit and roller lifters) and also a cam button to place on the front of the cam before the timing chain cover to prevent "cam walk"......had it for over 10 years, now, and would gladly do it again.

No pitfalls except for the money. Paying for the cam didn't bother me much, but when I had to pay for the reto-fit lifters.....now that hurt. Larry
