Default Good or bad idea?

Tomorrow when i come home from work i was thinking about pulling off my catilitic converter. Then taking a pipe and smashing it with a hammer straight through the cat. To take everything on the insides out and make it a straight pipe

Now is this a good idea for now? I dont need to worry about emissions but i dont want to put the money into a straight pipe right now, will this cause any problems, or hurt anything? If i do it ill take pictures of the prosess

why bother smashing anything, just remove the cat and bypass it, what can it cost? $10

Well, thats time and money, This summer i plan on buying sidepipes, if not sidepipes a full true duel straight through exaust anyways, This is something that i feel like doing temperary. No sence to spend 10$ and trying to find the parts, for something that wont be there for long. I will if it will mess soemthing up, but i dont think it will.

Ps. With school going i cant work alot until im 16(in3weeks) so im strapped for cash cars kind of not getting new parts much, more of me working on things right now. Its hard being 15 with one, there money and time consuming.

if you plan on getting exhaust anyway, dont even bother spending the time pulling it off to "bubbz-ize" your exhaust...

just stop eating till you can afford the exhaust.

Doubt the cat will come off without major structural damage making any thought of reattaching impossible. Cats get super hot and if it's original, the clamps will seems like they are welded on. You could cut it off but that wouldn't allow for reattaching. Be patient and wait for new exhaust.

I cut the cats off a camaro once in high school and replaced it with glass packs. It sounded pretty mean.

I also had a stopped up cat on another camaro and I did what you are talking about and crushed all the stuff out of it and put it back on. Worked pretty decent.

(I was a cash strapped youth also at one time hahaha)

if your cat is clamped i wouldnt attempt it, if your cat is like mine and
uses flanges with bolts at each end i say go for it as i think it will pop right out. last one i gutted for a friend i used a piece of rebar and worked for an hour. completely gutted the thing and and bolted it back on. he says it helped a lot it also changed the exhaust note for the better.

Probably a bad idea. I've read somewhere that hollowing out a cat will only cause a big open chamber for your exhaust gases to bounce around in rather than to flow straight throw, so you may in fact loose horsepower over the original cat. Then again this is applicable to newer more efficient cats, anything may very well be an improvement over those old cats.

Did you see an improvement with sound or performance with the test pipe?

it's a good idea! i bypassed my original cat and my 76 L48 runs much better especially at higher rpm's, it is a good temporary solution until you can afford duals. Sounds healthier too!

if you can get it off without any problems then go for it. after all these years it's probably messed up anyway.
