If both pairs of heads are prepped properly, AND depending on ALL the components in the short block, through years of our's AND Speed-Pro's testing, we have found that unless you run the unit over 5600 RPM, there's no advantage. No "seat-of-the-pants" feeling.

If the lower end components are going to make power in the "above-5800 range, then obviously the larger valves will work better. If not, it will be a total "drawback" by "killing off" some low-end torque.

I still have the test results kickin' around here somewhere on a "print-out" from Speed-Pro engineering. Keep in perspective, these results are over 20 years old, but basically still make some sense. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. As for installing the larger valves, unless an experienced shop is performing the operation, you may actually hurt the overall performance. It all has to do with the amount of "chamber-work", the shrouding and unshrouding of the valves that are being installed, the increase in the chamber volume, etc.

Actually at lower rpms, the smaller valves will promote more velocity, and thus more torque, at higher rpms the bigger valves allow more flow. But on a stock motor, you'd propbably not notice the difference.

On the other hand, it's a way of getting more flow with a smaller (duration) cam. Go with the large valves if given a choice on a SB.
