Hey guys..with about 2 weeks away from finishing my 454 rebuild in my 77' i'm already thinking about my next project 4 the winter n that is 2 change the gears....right now i'm running the original 3:08's with a 700r4 tranny......what gears would u guys suggest so that i can get that big blast off the line but still enjoy the parkway ride.....thanx....
Since you've got overdrive and a low 1st gear, go with 3.55 gears. I have 3.73, but no OD. Use a torque converter with about 2,500 rpm stall. Your off the line grunt will be tremendous, when you're not boiling the tires.

I agree too. 3.55 is a nice ratio but you can even get away with up to 4.11's and still cruise on the expresways. With 411 you are 2200 at 60 and 2500 at 70. Still a good rpm on the highway.
But hold off until you get the whole thing on the road. I had a 700r4 behind my big block and couldn't get enough tire out back to hook it up with the 3.08s.
I love 3.73's,... Been from 4.56 to 4.11 to 3.55 to 3.42 and even 2.73,.... on a few of my cars and friends, and with the 700R4 3.70 or 3.73 (depending on your year) is the hot ticket. At 70 MPH your cruise speed RPM is aroung 2400 - 2550. I am surprised that no one else recommended them???
308's with 225 70 tires should be about 2500@60mph. Sounds like you have about a 355 gear. You shoud count the turns to see if you cna figure out what you have.
I've been using 336 in BB cars and the guys love it but they are also used in 1:1 final trans ratios.
The best gear sets are Tom's but keep in mind he only has about 200 sets made then they are back ordered for about a year. I have a job in now and the guys wants 373's. I think I bought the last set and they are up to $325-$375 if you can find them. If you can wait get Tom's gears otherwise you have to settle for much less.
