I tried braking real hard the other day and I couldn't, it felt like I had manual brakes for a second. There is still power assist under light braking but not under hard braking. Is this because of a vacuum leak or is the booster just going bad?
Also, can I rebuild the booster myself? I have no idea how they work.
could be a booster dieing, thats what mine did. Changing it is a PITA, unbolt the master cyl, 4 bolts thru the firewall are the tough ones, hard to get to, I had to pull the drivers seat. There is a clip on the brake pedal pin that is a bear to get back on. I think it can be rebuilt, but for ther trouble, replace it.
Maybe vacuum leak, similar to mine. Check out my post near the top about needing a bubba fix for brakes. I had pcv, accessories, and brake booster all tied into one vacuum source and that pulled enough away from the booster that it wouldn't assist anymore. Make sure you booster has it's own vacuum source shared by nothing else.
I've pulled it out before when I did my pedal swap, wasn't that bad.
And I did yank off the hose a few days ago when I changed the jets in my carb. I nicked it a little but I didn't think that it went all the way through the hose. I'll go silicone it right now.
And my booster has its own vacuum source, shared by nothing else.
Here's a related question....my booster has it's own vacuum..it gets it off the front carb (dual quads), but it's on the ported side...should that be on the manifold vac side?
The manifold vac side is connect with a hose down to a canister under the driver side fender, I assume that's the headlite vac canister...if I need more vac on the brake booster, can I switch 'em??
