I was just wondering how easy it would be to put in an LT1 camshaft in an '78 L-82 engine. My dad was once told that it's real easy to do and he has wanted to do it since he purchased his silver anniversary in '78. So I was wondering three things. How easy would this be to do? How much would it cost for a mechanice to do it? And would you recommend doing this to a '78 L-82 vette with only 11.7k miles? To me I think it would make the car less valuable. But then again he isn't looking to sell it and he has wanted to do it since he bought the damn thing almost 24 years ago.
Drain coolant. Remove distributor. remove intake . Remove fan, pulleys, water pump & radiator. Rent puller to remove ballancer. Disconnect steering idler arm to lower steering linkage assy. Drain oil & remove or lower oil pan.
Remove timing cover. Turn over engine to line up marks on timing gears. Remove timing gears & chain. Loosen all rockers & remove pushrods.
Reach in valley and remove all lifters.
Now you are ready to remove the cam.
Reverse to install.
If your dad thinks it's real easy, ask him to do it
& recomend one of the comp cams xtreme energy series. The old LT-1 mech will need to be adjusted regularly, which may be difficult in that year with all of the smog & ac in the way
Good luck
hey...do you know where to get a better camshaft? Do you know a website that might have one and what would you recommend. How much would a new camshaft offer HP wise? 1/4 mile time? What is a good camshaft to look for?
Take it from someone who has had one. Find a better cam and put it in. The old LT1 cam is just that Old technology. Lots of duration with little lift. You would be better off with shorter duration and a little more lift. Comp cams has a website and a tech line to call. They can help you out. Most guys here are using a 262 to 268 cam from comp cams. They seem to be happy with them. My old Lt1 cam is in the basement with about 1k miles on it. Stay with the hyd lifters and you will be much happier than adjusting the solids.
