Loose Column Support Screws--Down Time?
Okay -- Now because of the great service that Mr. Shea has done in his papers, I have figured out I have loose support screws in my 1973 T/T Column.
It's pretty loose, is it dangerous? Can I take my time?
I am a mechanical engineer and am a OK weekend mechanic just a few steps up from Buba.
The question is --- how long should this take me to do (less the priming and painting)? How long did it take you? (anyone who has done it).
I don't want too much downtime. I would like to buy all the parts and have all the tools ready ahead of time. I can pick out the parts and tools from the papers. Or it would help if someone had a list or complete kit. Does anyone know approximate costs of parts? Tools? Can I rent any special tools? This is going to by my first and hopfully only column rebuild.
I see that rebuilds are anywhere from $600 to $800. Is it worth having someone else do it?

I did mine over the course of a weekend. You can either rent or purchase the tools, it cost me under $50 to purchase them from the local auto parts store. The cost will depend on how many parts you replace (i.e. bearings, Rack, Actuator Gear, etc). It cost me around $200 to replace most of the items in the column.
