Is it necessary to drop the front exhaust pipe on my 1982 Vette to get the starter to clear everything for removal? I unbolted the starter and have it almost free but it is hanging up on something so it won't come fully loose to remove it. Thanks.
I suppose that you have the 3 wires disconnected. There is also another nut on the back of the starter that is attached to a small brace that is bolted to the side of the block. This brace will move back and forth, and if you don't have the nut off it will give the appearance that the starter is free, but hung up on something.
If that's not the case, then I guess you'll have to wiggle it around to see if it will clear everything. Sometimes starters can seem impossible to get out without removing something, but usually you can get them out if you hold your mouth just right. :D

If this is a stock setup, then, assuming the 2 rear bolts are out, and the front bracket is off, you might have to lift the front part a little to get the rear part clear.
BTW, just make sure the battery is disconnected before you start.
