Default Engine replacement

I am currently planning an engine upgrade. Not sure which way to go. I'm looking for 350-400 hp.
I found a new 350 ZZ4 short block. Can anybody give me the detail on this engine. I asssume this is a late model block. What problems am I likely to encounter? Thanks!

Asking price is $1100. Is that a good price?

Hello, a long block ZZ4 crate motor from GM runs about 3300.00. Complete with intake, oil pain, distributer, long water pump, aluminum heads, roller cam, valve covers, the works. It is rated at 355 horse and 400 lbs torque. Great motor. If it was me and the ZZ4 was exactly what I was looking for in terms of performance, I would not build one starting with a short block. I would buy the crate motor, and get the warranty. By the time you build up a ZZ4 short block your gonna spend at least what you would to buy the crate motor. Just my 2 cents. Best wishes.

Why not get a whole engine? Granted, a complete ZZ4 will set you back about $3299. When it comes to bang for buck, you gotta give the 350 Goodwrench Engine at $1290 consideration. Comes with everything but distributor, intake/carb and water pump and is a direct replacement engine for your car. Factory HP of 250 will respond positively to an XE262 cam, Performer Intake/Carb, etc. Either Chevy High Performance or Hot rod ran an article on a hop-up of this $1290 crate engine and they were impressed with the gains achieved. Don't get me wrong, the ZZ4 is quite an engine but for your HP goals, you can reach your performance goals without it (and save a little too).

For the rebuild, we bought a ZZ4 crate engine and "tweaked" it to roughly 410 HP at a cost of $12K+. Here it is three years later and we could have simply bought an LS6 crate engine at 385 HP and dropped it in.

Besides asking yourself the power and torque questions, also throw in how long you want it to last. Initial expense is one thing; keeping it running is sometimes another.
