Default pcv & carb

today i got my new breather with nipple, to replace the pcv valve. when i installed it, the motor would die. couldn't keep it running. reinstalled pcv and it purr like a kitten. i know to keep the pcv valve on there and i won't have any more trouble. but i would like to understand whats going on,and why this breather won't work. 76 L48 auto
thanks for any input

This maybe be a stupid question and I'm not trying to belittle ya, but did you remember to block off the old vac line that originally ran to the pcv?

no the nipple is for running the same line to the carb it just doesn't have the guts of a pcv valve. it is built like a breather cap with a nipple for the line to carb

the breather runs between the valve cover and your air filter, yes?

i think what marshrat is asking you is "did you remember to block off the vacuum nipple on the carb?"

if you didn't, it will effect your A/F ratio and could be the cause of why your engine keeps dying.

hope this helps,

Mike.

That's a wide open vacuum leak. A breather cap like that is not intended to be used with the carb PCV vacuum port - it's intended for use with a crankcase evacuation system. You have to run a PCV if you hook it up to the carb since you have to have a controlled vacuum leak into the carb. Your open breather system needs to be used with a header collector evacuation system or a vacuum pump.
