Default master cylinder question

I pulled the cover off of my master cylinder to take a look, since my brakes felt a bit weak. Anyway, the reservoir closest to the firewall was empty and the forward reservoir was full. I wonder where the fluid went and it this typical for a master cylinder?

No that would not be typical. The back part of the master cylinder feeds the rear brakes. Check your rear brake calipers and brake lines and see if you see any leakage. If no leakage is spotted, I would think that the master cylinder is leaking internally.

I agree, it's normal for the fluid to drop a little as the pads wear, but it should not be empty.

you have a leak

If there is no sign of a leak at the calipers, check the rear of the M/C to see if it has leaked into the booster. Remove the 2 mounting nuts and slide it forward away from the booster. This leak location is common on high/old mileage cars.
