I have rebuilt quadrajet on my 71 454 vert. I have been running it in the shop and if run it then let it sit for 30 min or so and try to start it is flooded. have to hold it to the floor to start. the rebuilt carb was put on in 2001 and only has the 30 miles on it from when I drove it home. does it have an power valve similar to a holley? or what could it be?
sounds like it is boiling fuel in the bowl, it then squirts out into the throttle bore. Look into getting a heat shield for under the carb, insulate the fuel line/make sure its not running close to a header.
That would be IF it is actually flooding, next time it does this, check to see it it still has fuel in the bowl, look in the carb throat and bump the throttle to see if the pump squirts.
If it doesn't, then you may have a fuel pump problem.
It might be the float level set way too high, but it's more likely that a piece of debris is not letting the needle valve close completely, flooding the bowl.

it has a new fuel pump and new fuel line. it is flooding because the only way to start it is to hold the throttle completely open so it gets mor air for all the fuel. it is running rich right after it starts also. I will check the float level. it may just need to be ran wish I could but the frame off has several more months to go
I had same problem with my Qjet... previous reply has probably nailed it with the debris not letting the needle valve close... I would start there if I were you. easy fix.
