I'm putting a '74 454 together for the "nothing fancy"'77 - I had the block done and the cylinder head surface shaved either .020 or .030 - I have since found a set of rebuilt cylinders heads with either .020 or .030 - I forget which is which, but the total is .050.
I'm concerned the intake won't fit right and wonder if a .041 head gasket will make any difference? Or do they make anything thicker? .050's? or should I plan on selling these heads a getting new?
Machine shop told me BBC heads aren't as easy to shave on the intake surface as SBC heads are.
Do you know how thick the OEM head gasket used by Chev. is????? I know you can get S/B head gaskets up to .050", not sure about big blocks.
I took .040 off my small block heads, then went to a .039" from .017" steel shim head gasket with no intake fitting problems, but then that was only a net reduction of .018", so not sure about you .050" reduction, which is pretty significant.
I could get the manifold milled, but then I'd only be able to use this manifold with these heads. I think I'll call a machine shop or two and see what I can come up with.
