Default Fuel Economy?

Hey all, this is my first thread and i am from Australia.

I have loved corvettes for a long time and have always wanted a 78 (the silver anniversary model), but have lately changed my mind to the 80-82 corvette.

I think they are an awesome looking car, the stingray era has the better looks than any other model, although the c5/c6 is starting to get the curves back!

But the reason for this thread is to find out what the fuel consumption is like on the 80-82 corvette, i know i should not be thinking about a car like this if i am concerned about the fuel economy, but i am just curious. How many Litres to a mile? how many miles to a tank(how big is the tank)?
thanks

my 73 L82 gets about 18 miles to the gallon on the high way.

i think that converts to about 7.65 kilometers to the liter.

hopefully an 80-82 vette gets a little better than that.

Not really. My 80 L-82 gets 18 on the highway with cruise control. 81 with the electronic Q-Jet and 82 with crossfire might be marginally better.

thanks, that is not bad considering the age of the engine, i drive an 87 Holden VL Calais Turbo 3L (top of the range Commodore)and that uses 13L-14L to 100km which is the same as the corvette. The vl turbo covers the quarter is 15sec standard, but with more boost, intercooler and exhaust they can do it in 11s and 12seconds, pretty good for a 6 cylinder

Not sure if you have heard of our lastest v8 commodores/monaros, but they use the same engine as the corvette.

thanks again for the reply

what is the electronic q-jet? is that fuel injection?

i have a corvette book and it states that the 81 vette was the first year to bring back fuel injection. but i asked a corvette dealer if this was the case and he said no, it was the 83 model.
can someone cinfirm this, thanks

There is no such thing as a 1983 Corvette
The 1982 was replaced with the 1984 C4 Corvette
1982 was the first year for electronic fuel injection on a Corvette
crossfire I believe.

thats the first electronic controlled quadrajet used on corvettes, only one as far as I know. Only used in 81, the 82 was cross fire. The 81 has an electrical solenoid controlled by the ECM that modulates fuel/air mix at Idle and cruise, at WOT and hard Acceleration it operates Open Loop. There is a TPS ( Throttle Position Sensor) that tells the ECM where the throttle is. Its a pretty decent unit for what it is. MIne was getting almost 20mpg hiway when I broke it.

..... I believe the '81 DID have some-kind of 'funky' electronic-management system, either for the carb or ignition-timing, and they also had had a 1-year-only THM350-C, which had a lock-up torque converter.

The '82 had the first electronic fuel-injection system (Twin Turbo/Marck is probably the resident-expert on them ), named the 'Cross-Fire', and had a 4-speed/overdrive transmission with a lock-up converter with 2.87 or 2.72 rear-gears:
I once drove 236 miles (377.6 Km? ) on just over 10 gallons of fuel (37.9 litres? ) while averaging 75 MPH (120 Km/Hr? ) with the A/C blowing ice-cubes and the T-tops off thru the mountains of Taxylvaniastan.

For style, comfort, and effeciency, the '82 might be hard to beat, as-far-as C3s go.....

oh ok maybe he said 82 but he did say to stay clear of that model as the injectors and such get fouled and are hard to keep running right.

Mine runs decent (but it only has 24,200 miles on the clock ):
I knew, when getting the Cross-Fire, it wouldn't be a fire-breather, but it has performed flawlessly in the 6 years I've owned the car, with nothing more than running FI-cleaner thru the tank every few fill-ups.

Those who have tinkered with the Cross-Fire claim it has gotten a bad-reputation over the years, and that it can be maintained fairly easily:
I'd wait to hear what they say, or check-out the crossfireforum.com

The QuadraJet on the '80 305CID California smog cars and the '81s (all) are called "electronic" QJets because they are monitored by the computer and have attachments for computer connections. Regular QJets do not have connections for the computer.

The '82 cars have throttle body fuel injection and no carburetors. Same engine as in the '84 C4s.

2 year actually. The 1980 had a TH-350C also. I had to do some extensive research to make sure they did.

The '80 California Vette had the E4ME q-jet which had the primary barrels controlled by the computer, and all '81s had it also. The ignition advance is also computer controlled on these cars. My '81 got 19mpg before I kilt the system. Funny how everything works best right before it breaks. I get like 16 - 20mpg on the highway now, after removing the computer junk, emissions junk, and tuning it in right.

Stick an overdrive in any C3 and the gas mileage on the highway can go in to the 20's no problem.

I stand-corrected..... the only source-book I have says it was an '81-only deal, but a quick call to a friend who recently hot-rodded and '80 confirmed you are correct.

You don't buy a vette for fuel econ..... but if it is a big problem I would consider a T56 conversion. With a 6 speed you can have all the acceration you want and still get great fuel econ on the highway

According to this: http://www.france-property-and-infor...le.htm#Mileage , I'm getting about 11.2 liters per 100km (21 mpg) in my 427 vert. Thanks in no small part to teh Tremec transmision...

Oh, I have a 15 US gallon tank. Not sure if varys by year. I would suppose it does.
