Default Steering wheel,..tilt vs. std

On my 73, is there a difference in the steering wheel used for tilt/telescopic steering columns vs. non-tilt?

The actual steering wheel is the same T&T versus standard (non adjustable) steering columns. However, by actual steering wheel, I mean the handwheel that attaches to the T&T hub or to the standard column hub with six screws.

All of the other attaching parts, horn parts, and special telescope locking parts are unique to the type of steering column.

Jim, Do you have the dimensions of the hub for the t/t and non tilt columns? Ihave only pics to go by but it seems the height and the center depth is the same. If this is true, then you could machine down the hub diameter to fit inside the extension and then use it for a T/T column.

I don't have the dimensions of the two hubs.

I am sure that the splines and taper (that engage the hubs) on the T&T and the standard steering column steering shafts are the same dimensions.

From my steering column drawings, when you retract the T&T steering shaft a reference dimension on the taper on the steering shaft would be .10 inch below the very end of the steering column housing. That same reference dimension on that taper on the standard column steering shaft would be .15 inch above the end of the standard column housing.

So there is .25 inch difference the way the two hubs end up when installed on their respective steering shafts.

If you turn down the outside diameter of the standard column hub it should fit on the T&T column and slide inside the housing. It would sit 0.25 inch different on the T&T steering shaft. But I just don't have enough hub information to be able to say if there are any other problem areas or if that .25 inch affects anything else.

So, if I someday have the pesos and decide to go T&T, I can use my original steering wheel.

Thanks!
